They Say “A” but Really Mean “B” – a Relationship Dictionary Primer

RFM_FakePhotoMany times we try to hide what we really feel by framing our thoughts into sentences that appear to convey another meaning, yet safely getting us what we want! Here are some of the most common examples of they say this but they mean that.

If you have heard your partner saying ‘Our relationship is getting way too serious’, it usually means that your partner wants you to stop bothering too much. They are perhaps not as into you as you may want them to be, and are simply trying to say, ‘I don’t want to leave you, but the idea of taking it too far is not what I have on my mind at this point’. It is also a way of trying to tell you that they need more space than they are getting in the current case scenario. Talk to them over and it is advisable that you do not ignore such comments.

Often when people say ‘you know my memory sucks’ when they have forgotten something, it only means that they are ready take the blame on themselves for forgetting something important, and do not want another row about it, but at the same time are perhaps not even interested in changing their ways! You could simply translate this into ‘I don’t remember, but no point creating a fuss about it. I would not remember it again anyway!’

If you are a woman, you might have often heard your man saying ‘that’s a woman’s work’. Well you should know what they really mean here is that ’the work is dirty, tiresome, and boring. I hate the idea of having to do it!’ .Your partner is desperate to avoid the work here!

If you are a man, you must have heard your lady asking ‘How do I look?’ or saying ‘I know I look awful today’. It only means she want you to tell her that you love the way she is looking. You could say it’s just a decent way of her saying ‘please compliment me!’

You might have used this one too, so you could already be knowing the real deal behind it when people say ‘I can’t find it anywhere around the house’. More often than not this ‘they say this but they mean that’ situation implies that they are just not willing to really look for what they were supposed to find, saying ‘I am feeling too lazy for it, please search for it yourself!’

Another very common they say this but they mean that example is of when they use the word ‘maybe’. It is usually a way of saying ‘the answer is NO, but since you seem to be in the mood to argue, you might as well discover the reality later!’

So next time you hear your partner taking such language, you might as well try having some fun catching them in their act! Ask them if what they really meant is what you just learnt, and enjoy as they get into a fix trying to wheel the conversation to back to the point of view they tried to convince you with! Busting them can be fun!
