How do I Get ‘Out There’ When all I Want to do is be a Couch Potato?

RFM_FakePhotoHow do I get ‘out there’ when all I want to do is be a couch potato- in one word-motivation! Motivation is the key to achieving anything you desire but only talking about it will not get you any further. If this was the case, we could all spend our entire lives being couch potatoes yet mouthing the homily of ‘motivation’! The thing to do to get ‘out there’ is to identify two main characteristics of your personality and take it from there.

The first is the desire to achieve something. If the wish does not come from the bottom of your heart, you will only indulge in a lackluster pursuit of it. The desire has to be strong enough to propel you to get up from that couch and do something about your life. How many of us go whining through life that all the good things happen to only others and never ourselves; but, do we do anything beyond whining? No, most of us are content to let things remain the same because we are afraid of hard work. We do not want to put in that effort to better our situation; we would prefer to get everything on a platter.

The other cause why we fight shy of doing something concrete is because we are scared of getting disappointed. But, we cannot go through life only expecting positive things to happen to us and we must be prepared to take the bad with the good. Remaining a couch potato may seem like a good idea if you keep telling yourself it doesn’t matter, you are anyways not going to lose weight or whatever. This is negative thinking and you must snap out of it if you are really keen to get ‘out there’.

Second is to setting realistic goals for yourself. A single, large goal sometimes appears to be hard to attain than when the same goal is divided into smaller parts. For instance, if want to get up from the couch and go do some exercises don’t put in long hours at one stretch in the exercises. You will soon be back to your favorite position; on the couch with the remote! Instead, start off with 15 minutes and then gradually build up from there. Join a gym; just the thought of paying all that money for the gym subscription without actually utilizing it is sure to send you sprinting to the gym!

Ask family members to help you overcome the addiction of the couch. Tell them to hide the remote. Without the remote, the staunchest of couch potatoes will find it tough to keep channel surfing. Also, another idea would be to enroll yourself in some evening classes on a regular basis, so, that you are out of the house and are not tempted to sit in front of the TV.

To accomplish this you have to first have the motivation and the will to achieve something.
