Don’t Let Your Ego Ruin Your Relationship

cartooonEgo is a small word that can have great impacts on our lives and relationships. The worst part is that many a times we do not even realize how much it is affecting us. The reason for this is that we often allow ego to become so much a part of our personalities that we do not know how to separate it out of our lives. Here are some factors that people need to understand in order to prevent their egos from taking control of their lives.

In order to ensure that you don’t let your ego ruin your relationship, you must first understand that it is not always necessary to defend yourself each time an argument comes up. Often the best thing to do is stay shut if your partner does not seem to be in a good mood, and then explain yourself later clearly when the right time comes. This lets your partner know what you have to say, and does not let your point of view get lost somewhere in a battle of words and ego that rarely makes sense anyway.

Also, it is important to remember that you should always fight fair. You maybe good at arguing, but you don’t need your talent when you are fighting with your partner. If you have been wrong, accept it. If your partner is right in pointing at your mistake, do not argue uselessly.

To make sure that you don’t let your ego ruin your relationship you must keep reminding yourself that ego is not synonymous to self respect. Even though it is important to keep your self respect up even in the most intimate relationships, the fact remains that the ‘self-respect’ bit does not really have to blow out of proportion turning into ego. Learn where to draw your line.

Learn to forgive and forget so that you don’t it ruin your relationship. Often ego forbids you from seeing sense and being practical in relationships. Perhaps you started demanding too much attention or love from your partner. They might sometimes be wrong too, but the point is you have to accept both their good as well their bad features, especially if you are looking for a long standing relationship. Learn how to forgive and forget the past and move on. Even if something they did really hurt your sentiments, you cannot afford to carry the hurt with you.

It is necessary to also understand that your partner too has an ego. They have self respect as well, and probably face the same emotional turmoil when you both have an ego-issue cropping up. One of you has to hold themselves back in order to make sure that the situation does not go out of hand. Now, since you are reading this article and understand this fact, you might as well be the one taking the initiative!

While you keep these factors in mind, it is important to keep telling yourself that shedding your ego is not  equivalent to changing your own self or your believes. It is merely a way of reaching a level of compromise where both, your individuality and relationship can survive in a healthy way. Remember it may not always be easy to stop your ego from coming in between, but keeping patience and acting matured can help you take your relationship a long way.
